Boneyard Beach (Dish album)

Boneyard Beach is a 1995 album by Raleigh, North Carolina band Dish, led by singer and pianist Dana Kletter, on Interscope Records. The album was produced by John Agnello at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.〔''Billboard'' 4 March 1995 page 25 " I have a different way of thinking about that," says Kletter, who formed Dish in the summer of 1992, after recording two albums and one EP on ... Agnello and Dish chose the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis to cut "Boneyard Beach."〕 Interscope's VP, Tom Whalley, told ''Billboard'' magazine that "the high quality of songwriting in Dish and the sound of Dana's voice are two things that set this band apart."〔''Billboard'', March 4, 1995〕
The album was not a commercial success and the group's members moved on to other projects,〔''Independent Weekly'', December 23, 2009〕 however the album did garner favorable reviews. CMJ New Music reviewed the album saying Kletter's vocals sounded like "tomboy version" of Natalie Merchant,〔''CMJ New Music Monthly'' June 1995 page 32 "DISH Boneyard Beach Interscope - There are moments throughout Dish's debut when Dana Kletter's voice sounds quite like that of Natalie Merchant, only with more depth, power and range; it's the tomboy version of Merchant's comely ..."〕 while Trouser Press described the album as offering "elegant, haunting melodies with nary a hint of excess sugar".〔''The Trouser Press guide to '90s rock'' 0684814374 1997 Page 215 "Dish's Boneyard Beach is a whole another thing, offering elegant, haunting melodies with nary a hint of excess sugar."〕 ''Musician'' noted "lush melodies and oblique lyrics".〔''Musician'' No.s 200 to 205 - 1995 Page 212 " "I like to hide my allegiances," laughs Dana Kletter, singer and pianist for the Raleigh, North Carolina quartet Dish. She's not kidding. On the band's debut album, Boneyard Beach, Kletter uses lush melodies and oblique lyrics to depict primal ..."〕 ''Music Hound'' described the sound of Dish as adding "rocked-up guitar and drums" to the sound of Kletter's earlier project Blackgirls.〔 Gary Graff ''MusicHound rock: the essential album guide'' 1996 "Dish, Kletter's new band, adds rocked-up guitar and drums to the basic blackgirls sound on the brilliant Boneyard Beach. (Interscope, 1995, prod. John Agnello) "〕
